Founder
Maryam Bala
I was raised (and currently live) in Canarsie and Far Rockaway, 2 neighborhoods in Brooklyn filled with low-income communities.
My walks and journeys throughout my neighborhood are filled with the sites of mono-tone grey and maroon low-income housing.
Though villainized and ignored in NYC media, these residents are my family and friends.
I hear and see their trials.
WHM is my opportunity to help a community NYC politicians have long abandoned. We aren't just trying to fix these homes, we hope to help change the system.
I believe that we all deserve a place to feel comfortable, and that place should be our home.
My future career choice is to be a civil engineer, but I'm more than just STEM.
I play the cello, compose music, love literature, fly drones and most of all I love learning and teaching others.
Outreach+Events Coordination Director
Faridah Bala
Hi, my name is Faridah Bala and I'm a rising junior in Midwood High School's Medical Science program. I go by she/her pronouns and some of my hobbies are bullet journaling, crocheting, and I've recently taken interest in rollerskating. In the future, I aspire to be a pediatrician and I've joined this program because I feel like a home is key to a child's development, if their surroundings feel suffocating then their imaginations/thought process will endure the same treatment which is what drew me to this program in the first place. As a frequent user of social media, I see how reaching out to others and bringing matters to public attention can build meaningful connections and increase the impact of an organization focused on helping people. With this in mind, I hope to use my position as the Outreach director to make others aware of this program, allowing them to volunteer with our teams, donate whatever they can towards our porgram's cause, and increase this program's influence on our community.
Journalism Director
Devon Seifer
I am a rising senior at Brooklyn Technical High School with a passion for writing, design, and engineering.
Although I’m currently on track to become a civil engineer, I’d like to also pursue something in the fields of sociology and current events, journalism most of all.
No matter what path I end up choosing, however, I aspire to make a difference in my community and contribute to progress.
I also enjoy writing simply for fun, my favorite type being satire. Similarly, I simply love interior design and thrift shopping, and believe that any space can be equally beautiful, functional, and economically manageable.
Photography Director
Anaya Mcleod
Hey, I’m Anaya!
I was born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in NYC.
I take great pride in my Caribbean heritage, culture, and family.
Some of my current interests include art, specifically visual, digital, and line art. And self-expression through clothing and style. Hobbies that I partake in are acoustic guitar, photography, and music discovery.
My biggest current goal is to get into a good college that is in or out of state. And though I am not completely sure about my path in the farther future, I aspire to major and pursue a career in the science field. As for the present and upcoming years, I want to be part of as many things as I can and be part of an impactful change, like wonderful homemakers, especially for people who look like me.
Videography Director
Tamera Simon
Hi everyone, my name is Tamera Simon. I'm a current high school senior from Georgia, and I'm thrilled to be a part of this organization that aims to make a difference for those who are unable to feel at home in their NYC housing. As the Videography Director, my role is to contribute to this mission by utilizing my skills in videography to raise awareness and create impactful content. I am excited to collaborate with the team and capture stories that will inspire change and compassion. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.I want to major in biomedical engineering and concentrate on regenerative medicine in the future. I find it interesting because it mixes my love of science and technology with the chance to help create ground-breaking healthcare solutions. I intend to help enhance the methods and technologies that encourage the regrowth and repair of harmed tissues and organs. Some of my hobbies are reading, skateboarding, and listening to music.
